The Dream of the Cosmos:
a Quest for the Soul

http://www.archivepublishing.co.uk

- Description and Endorsements -

The Dream of the Cosmos is the story of a multi-layered quest to understand the causes of human suffering and to reconnect with a deeper reality than the one we inhabit in this physical dimension of experience. It seeks to answer the questions: “Who are we?” and “Why are we here, on this planet?” It is offered to those who are looking for something beyond the superficial values of our culture, who may be disillusioned with religious and secular belief systems as currently presented and who question political values which are deeply mired in the pursuit of power. It is written with two voices: one the voice of a personal quest and the other which explores the historical and psychological causes that have brought into being our present view of reality. Anne Baring

Anne Baring has devoted her life to humanity’s recovery of the anima mundi – the soul of the world, and indeed its own soul. The Dream of the Cosmos is the climax of that quest, the fruit of a lifetime of thought and feeling, learning and vision. It is the story of a dramatic personal journey, but also an attempt to confront the greatest issues facing our time. Every page breathes her moral passion, her love of beauty, her spiritual aspiration, her deep care for the Earth. Above all, Anne Baring calls for a fundamental transformation in the way human beings live on this Earth and with each other. It would not be too much to say that this book is a cri de coeur from a place deep in the collective psyche that carries not only our past but our future. The Dream of the Cosmos pulses with the fierce tenderness and grave urgency of love for an infinitely precious new being struggling to be born.

Richard Tarnas,
author of The Passion of the Western Mind and Cosmos and Psyche

Anne Baring’s magnum opus, twenty years in the making, is one of the publishing events of the year: brilliant, profound and magisterial in its scope. In it she addresses the real cultural roots of our multi-faceted crisis — spiritual, psychological, ecological, social, political and economic. Much attention since 2008 has been directed to the economic symptoms that are now translating into a widespread social malaise, but few commentators have plumbed the depths as this book does and called for a radically new outlook. For too long the soul and the feminine principle have been marginalised and suppressed, but Anne Baring’s life experience and passionate engagement have enabled her to understand and articulate the imbalance in our Western culture and show how it can be overcome. The book is a symbol of hope and renaissance — essential reading for anyone wishing to understand the patterns of Western cultural history and the potentials of its future development.

David Lorimer,
Programme Director, The Scientific and Medical Network

The need to heal the split between spirit and matter — the need for the return of the feminine — is one of the most important stories of our present time. As we wake up to our ecological crisis, we sense the imbalance that lies at the root of our culture, the result of our loss of contact with the sacredness of the earth that is the cornerstone of all indigenous cultures. But few have dared to penetrate to the very foundation of this cultural split and to see how it has evolved over the centuries, to comprehend the real depths of the imbalance that now threatens our whole planet. Anne Baring’s extraordinary personal journey has taken her to that deeper vision and understanding. Her book is a testimony to the Feminine; it is the story of what we have lost and what we need to regain.

Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee,
author of The Return of the Feminine and the World Soul.

Anne Baring is a lyrical writer. Why? Because she is able not only to amass a vast body of scholarship, and then to order it and produce lucid clarity; but then comes her real genius. Her real genius is to see the light that wants to come through — through the volumes, through the centuries, through the history, the myths and the legends. And her ability to make sense of human experience, and to express it as lyrically as she does, throws essential light on our present condition. This is contemporary politics as it should be applied by leaders. This is history as it should be taught in schools, to liberate the imaginative souls of children. This is insight and inspiration to open the minds and the hearts of twenty-first century adults. This book will change your perspective on what it is to be human, and enable you to see the opportunity that we humans now have, to evolve. Just read the Introduction and you’ll see. This book is a goldmine.

Scilla Elworthy,
Councillor of the World Future Council and founder of the Oxford Research Group (1982) and Peace Direct (2002). She was awarded the Niwano Peace Prize in 2003 and has been nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize.

This is the opus magnum for which one might say, without exaggeration, that Anne has incarnated in this lifetime to produce for the benefit of many. The Dream of the Cosmos is at once both a visionary autobiography including many of Anne’s own dreams, and a comprehensive archetypal history of the constellation, separation from, and resurgence of the feminine. Included in this deep scholarship are profound insights into the origins of misogyny as well as the soulful claims of instinct and its dangerous shadows expressed in violence and oppression. Anne leads us on a remarkable journey to understand the roots of our current suffering and the way forward to embrace a new and necessary sacred vision of reality — one supported by the new sciences — that includes the whole of nature and the cosmos. If you read only one book in the next decade, this encyclopaedic volume is the one you should read.

Veronica Goodchild,
author of Songlines of the Soul: Pathways to a New Vision for a New Century

Anne Baring is one of the great pioneers on the Divine Feminine of our time. Her work is a marvellous marriage of profound learning, deep and mature mystical experience and a vivid immediate gift of communication. Her latest book, The Dream of the Cosmos, is the consummation of her life’s work, twenty years in the making. It is a masterpiece that will last a long time and deserves to be read by all seekers and anyone interested in the birth of a new civilization out of the chaos of our time.

Andrew Harvey,
author of Return of the Mother and Radical Passion

Anne Baring (b. 1931) MA Oxon, is a Jungian analyst , author and co-author of seven books including, with Jules Cashford (1992), The Myth of the Goddess: Evolution of an Image. A recent book — Soul Power — written with Dr. Scilla Elworthy, offers an agenda for a conscious humanity. Her work is devoted to the recognition that we live in an ensouled world and to the restoration of the lost sense of communion between us and the invisible dimension of the Cosmos that is the source or ground of all that we call ‘life’.
